This image shows what girls really are!
Today in class (without the boys) we read some pretty inspiring and relatable poems. The first poem we read was "homage to my hips" by Lucille Clifton. In the video that we watched we hear that Lucille liked to write about her body parts and how they make her special. She wrote about her hips say that they occupy space, are beautiful they way they are, and she has learned to accept the flaws. So Lucille is basically comparing her hips to her as a woman. She occupies space, she is beautiful the way she is, and she has learned to accept her flaws. This was a beautiful poem because in the would that we live in today it is difficult to love yourself because of all the guidelines that are given to you in order to be considered "beautiful." The world, society, and media has shaved everyone views on whats beauty is, especially young boys now a days.
The next poem we read was "Hanging Fire" by Audre Lorde and it talks about the ups and downs of being a teenager. From the littles thing like what you are going to wear tomorrow to the thinking of even walking up in the morning, race through your head 24/7. Its hard being a teen. One moment your that little girl talking about cars and wrestling and throwing punches and the next moment you are a woman talking about boys and trying to fit the standards that are set by the media and society. And all throughout these times you have your mother to talk to... but it isn't that easy. They girl in this poem wants to her mom se bad but fear takes over the girl because she thinks she is only one. SHE IS NOT ALONE! Every teenage girl has been through this and know the pain. The problem is that some or many people don't want to relive that terrible pain.
The last poem we read was called "My Mother's Closet" by Kate Buckley and was probably the most difficult poem for me to understand. Towards the end people were saying that the father raped the child but in the end that wasn't really the case. The daughter was searching through her mother clothing, bags, and images trying to find some form of "evidence" but what that evidence was, we didn't quite figure that out. In the end that dad comes upon the daughter and takes he out of the closet as if trying to hid something. I added on that its difficult for a parent to relive something that hurts, like and Hanging Fire. The father doesn't what to relive what ever happened to the mother and have to tell it to the child.
To finish of this weeks wonderful class we listen to Beyonce's song "Pretty Hurts." To be completely honest, I don't really like R&B or Pop music, Im more of an alternative person. But, this song was AMAZING. I mean come on people, if this beautiful woman is trying to make a point to you, LISTEN! But overall we had a beautiful class and some awesome poems!
